Merritt James SHERMAN  (1938-2010)

Merritt James SHERMAN (Jim) (Sherm) Jim Sherman, loyal husband, devoted father and grandfather, died peacefully at home on March 25, 2010. Jim had battled cancer coura geously for the past year. He was a friendly, helpful, caring man whom always had a warm smile and was loved by all. He will be dearly missed by his wife Linda, son Ed Sherman (Chris), daughter Renee Craig (Tony), stepchildren Aaron Mehl and Ethan Mehl, Julli Mehl, Bridget Barrington, Cassie Anderson and Morgan Anderson and 6 grandchildren and 8 step- grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also sur vived by his father Jim Sherman and sister Carol Kent (Jerry) and pre ceded in death by his mother Ina Sherman. Jim was born in Seattle on August 4, 1938. He was devoted to public ser vice being a Seattle Firefighter and Fire Marshall for 30 years, serving as an instructor of CPR, 1st Aid and AED for the past 18 years. He gradu ated from West Seattle High School, where he was an athlete in many sports and continued playing and excelling in all sports including bas ketball, golf and softball through the years. He played senior softball to the highest levels, being a member of teams winning many prestigious tournaments including national and world titles. Jim's on field exploits earned him 13 coveted championship rings. He had claimed his winning of 3 Grand Slam rings as his highest softball honor. Jim played his senior ball with W.E. Ruth Realty, Eme rald City Masters and Joeseppi's where he was consistently a .800 average hitter and a member of the tournament's All Star Teams. Jim was a Director and Safety Trainer for Senior Softball-USA and was the first player to be inducted into their Hall of Fame last December at the 2009 National Convention in Nash ville Tennessee. When Jim was not on the field playing the game he loved, you could probably find him umpiring in one of the other games. Sherm was eventually named National Umpire and Chief for Senior Softball-USA. He left his umpiring position to become Senior Softball-USA's Safety and First Aid Officer, a post which lead him to the formation of one of his greatest lega cies, the Heart Defibulator Pro gram. His passion and teachings have already led to the saving of 4 lives on the softball field, through the use of a defibulator by members of Jim's trained staff. To know Sherm was to love himhe made friends all over the world, with his quick smile and easy going manner. His pres ence on this earth has truly made a difference. We will all miss him deeply. A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 24st, 2010 at the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, 12817 SE 256th, Kent, WA 98030. In lieu of flowers re membrances may be made to the Charteris Foundation, PO Box 24766, Federal Way, WA 98093. The founda tion for the Chaplin program supporting fire and police personnel. Interment will be at the Tahoma National Cemetery at a later date.

  • "I miss Jim so much. I was lucky enough to work with him for the past 10 years as he supervised and refereed our "short shots" and "mighty mites" basketball program for K-2nd graders. He was truly a class act whom every moment in his presence I was..."
